RE: [benchmarksixsigma] Re: Analyse the results ..

Hello Mr. Gupta,

What is the Spec and tolerance ?

Without this, Cp, Cpk cannot be evaluated.

One question, is the data coming out from a stable process.

Hi every one,

Mr Kiran Kumar's explaination about type of projects is in right direction. I would like to add one more perspective in addition to saving criterion of six sigma project classification.

Let us start with the roles of BB, GB & YB.

A company implementing six sigma o full scale through out the oganization has the following type of set up.

BB:- Its time six sigma resource and its main job is to facilitate six sigma deployment through resource development in terms of YB & GB and also next level BB.

GB:- Its a part time six sigma resource, mostly working in the main function ands also doing six sigma project. For a GB, doing six sigma project is normally takes his 10-20% of total time. Here again six sigma knowledge & skill varie4s from company to company. Some compnay provide almost similar in depth training to GB as thye case of BB is. Here GB differes form BB in terms of part time / full time role only. Green belt leads a project as project leader with team members.

YB:- Yellow belts are nothing but team members in a project. Its just different terminology used by some companies.   Here their role is specifically assigned pertaining to their functional area of work under the  domain of six sigma project. YB or team members spend much less time in project as team member. Here some times implementation of say one part of project can also be assigned to YB as a project itself.

Above stated is typical structure. There are variations from it from organiztion to organization in practice.

Now if we look from the project tpye perspective as to the difference in BB,GB & YB projects. The above concept clearly leads us to the conclusion that its the complexity of the project which makes it qualify for type of project.

BB spend full time in six sigma so he can handle projects of Cross fucntional nature as he can spend time with multi functional members and facilitate the project implementation in coordination with multiple HODs sorting out the interfunctional issues in the project.

Its difficult for a GB to handle a project spaning over number of functions/depts because he is working in one dept and do not have much time available to him for resolving cross functional issues. At the most he can interact with the immediate neighbour dept. therefore inspite of having six sigma knowledge at par with BB ( not always) he can not handle projects as complex as a BB can.

Now let us see case of YB. They have to do projects very much within dept control becasue one person may be team member in mutliple projects aprt from doing his own small project with in his own dpet.

In my opinion, applying project saving criterion to classify a project wrt BB,GB ,YB may not be correct becasue some time a  project within dept can bring huge savings and a BB project although cross fucntional in nature but may bring good savings. This is very true in transactional projects. they are complex in nature and surly BB projects but savings are not significant.

Although there is no fix boundaries for classifying the six sigma projects bcos the practice differ from firm to firm. what i have mentioned above is my opinion based on my last 6-7 years of six sigma implementation experience.

I would be happy to know if some one has a third persective on classifying the projects.

Hi Smitha,

The classification of projects into Yellow Belt / Green Belt & Black Belt
depends on few things :

Yellow Belt : Scope > Smallest(1-2 processes) / Duration > 30-45 Days /
Benefits > Small & Basic improvements / Complexity > Least Complex(One tool
atleast from DMAIC framework) / Benefit > Rs.50,000 - 1 Lakh

(This project mostly helps in solving small problems in a scientific
manner. Eg : Using basic statistics to resolve staffing/Operation
challenges in a MCDonalds outlet. These projects can be looked at as
Kickstarters as the person who cmpletes these will be energized to take
bigger challenges)

Green Belt : Scope > Medium (4-6 processes) / Duration > 2-3 Months /
Benefits > Medium level Benefits(Monetary/Quality) / Complexity > Medium
Complex (2-3 tools as required from DMAIC) / Benefit > Rs 1-Lakh - 10 Lakh
per Annum

These projects can form the Backbone of a strong SixSigma
Department/Implementation

Black Belt : Scope > Large (6-10+ processes) / Duration > 3-6 Months /
Benefits > High Level Benefits (Monetary/Quality) / Complexity > Highly
Complex(Requires indepth Analysis and extensive tool usage. Complex tools
like QFD/DOE could be used) / Benefit > 10 Lakh above and beyond.

I made an effort with my experience with SixSigma for 2 years. Critique
welcome from experts....apologies in advance if the stated is not apt....

Have a pleasant day.

Hi All,

I have a question to post ?. How do you identify whether a project is green
belt/black belt/yellow belt?

What are the criteria involved in selecting a project?

Appreciate your response !!!!
